Lousy connectivity again so no updates until Vegas tomorrow night. We rolled into Zion noonish yesterday. The ride from Bryce to Zion is spectacular, with a drive through a two mile tunnel cut in the 20's. Unfortunately, it is only wide enough for regular cars so they have to run it one way to get all the RV's through.
This is kind of the story of Zion. The main part of the park is not accessible by private auto in the high season. They force you to take shuttle busses through the park. The park has trouble handling the volume because visitation is huge (too close to Vegas, I suspect) and the geography means that it is hard to find spots for cars both in the park and in the town right outside.
We took the shuttle loop yesterday afternoon to get a sense of the place and took a short hike and promptly got rained on. After the better part of an hour on busses we returned to a semi flooded campsite. Not too big a deal in the trailer, but a pain nonetheless.
Today we got a late start and tried to get in a morning hike only to find out the trail was half closed for improvements. We had a nice lunch in the charming lodge and took an afternoon hike that finally redeemed Zion. The hike is called Angels Landing. More on it tomorrow with pics, but I will say that the last 1/2 mile of the trail was insane.
